Prof TC Rao

Prof. T. C. Rao obtained his Ph. D degree in Mineral Engineering from University of Queensland, Australia (1965). He stayed in Australia for eight years and traveled extensively abroad and in India during his professional career; participated in many international seminars/meetings as special invitee. He was a Faculty member of IIT, Kanpur for eight years and then took up the assignment of Professor and Head of Mineral Engineering department of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. He established a new four-year graduate programme (B.Tech) in Mineral Engineering, the only of its kind in India. He was also Dean of Academic & Research at Indian School of Mines.

In the year 1989, Prof. Rao took over as Director of RRL, Bhopal, the only CSIR laboratory in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Though the laboratory was on the “verge of closure” at that stage, it emerged as one of the “best performing” CSIR laboratories under the leadership of Dr.Rao and achieved many laurels for its outstanding contributions. Dr. Rao superannuated in the year 2000.

From 2000-2004 Prof. Rao was as an Advisor to Environment Planning & Co-ordination Organization (Housing and Environment Department, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh) in addition to being a consultant to some mining companies.

Prof. Rao published nearly 200 Research Papers in International and National journals. His pioneering works on “modeling of unit operations in coal and mineral processing” are being extensively used by the academic institutions and industries all over the world for process simulation and optimisation. Prof. Rao was awarded prestigious National Mineral award, National Metallurgists award (both of Government of India) and Lajja Shankar Jha award for outstanding contribution in Engineering & Technology in the State of Madhya Pradesh. In addition, he is recipient of many awards/citations from various professional bodies.

Prof. Rao has been a member of many Advisory Committees and Board of Directors of various State and Central Government Agencies. He is a Fellow member of many prestigious societies including National Academy of Engineering and was Chairman, Institution of Engineers of M.P. State Centre. Prof. Rao is also on the Editorial Boards of reputed International and National journals.

Prof. Rao has been a consultant to mineral-based private & public sector companies. He worked as visiting Scientist at R&D, Tata Steel, Jamshedpur from. His “innovative approaches” have lead to significant “economic benefits” to coal and mineral industry in the country.

Presently Dr. Rao is consultant to some of the mineral/coal processing industries in addition to being on scientific committees of organizations like CSIR. Prof. Rao is a scholar of International and National repute, an able Administrator and an Authority in Resource utilization.
